Farming Your Forest

The Smoky Mountain Native Plants Association and the North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension Service will present a one-day workshop titled “Farming Your Forest” on Saturday, March 19. Forest land owners, farmers, wild crafters, and food entrepreneurs are invited to participate in the event at the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center.
Topics include:
- FOOD AND HERBS FROM THE FOREST: Wild Harvest Regulations, Ramps Propagation and Sustainable Harvest
- DRIED FOOD FOR HOME AND SALE: Manufacturing Overview for Food-Based Business
- DOES YOUR FOREST TALK MONEY?: A Forestry Management and Smart Investment Lecture Series presented by forestry and horticulture experts from WNC
Featured speakers include Jeanine Davis, Ph.D., a horticulturist with the Special Crops Program of NCSU, Caroline Edwards, Non Timber Forest Products Advisor of NCSU; Michael Cheek and Brian Schneider of the NC Division of Forest Resources, Alyx Perry, Director of Southern Forests Network, as well as Beverly Whitehead, Carol Lawson, and Dustin Raxter of the Smoky Mountain Native Plants Association.
The cost of the workshop is $30, and scholarships are available if you can’t afford the fee. There will be a limited number of Ginseng seeds and books given away. The giveaway books will be ‘Growing & Marketing Ginseng, Goldenseal & Other Woodland Medicinals’ by Persons & Davis.
